Harper Hardware Co., Inc. located at the corner of 18th and East Broad Streets in historic Shockoe Valley, operating from its central facility of 10,000 square feet has successfully resisted the many temptations of offers to sellout to larger entities and kept the business
closely held by the Harper family.
Since the relocation from 510 East Marshall Street in 1981, where we served the downtown retail community and merchants, we have grown to largely serving the industrial accounts throughout Virginia and occasionally shipping to Canada, Jamaica, The Fiji Islands and occasionally as far away as South Africa.
Our success has been largely attributed to our broad product range, form the simply hard to find screw to the $100,000 machine. We always say, “IF WE CAN’T GET IT YOU DON’T NEED IT!”
C. B. Harper, Sr., born in Staunton VA., in 1875 opened C. B. Harper Hardware Co. in 1898 at 508-510 East Marshall Street, the hub of activity and served the Hanover Farmers. We quickly earned a reputation of selling only quality products. In 1936 C. B. Harper, Jr. went to work full time and served as President until his passing in May 2004.
In 1976 Charlie Harper III became involved full time and has constantly maintained the reputation of quality products and unexcelled personal service. He is currently the sole President and Owner of the corporation.
Harper Hardware Co., Inc. has remained in downtown Richmond thought many trials, battles and disappointments. We proudly celebrated our 100th anniversary in December 1998 when December 14 – 19, 1998 was declared by the Mayor and Harper’s Hardware Week.
